How to Cite, Credit, and Acknowledge the Data

Attribution Introduction

This page provides citation and attribution guidance for each published version of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction datasets. The page is organized by dataset version, Version 1.0, Version 1.2, and Version 2.0, with three datasets within each version corresponding to the registry’s three geographic levels: Administrative 0 (Episcopal Conferences), Administrative 1 (Ecclesiastical Provinces), and Administrative 2 (Dioceses and equivalent jurisdictions). Each dataset includes an APA citation, followed by additional citation formats available in the expandable section below it. Please use the citation corresponding to the specific dataset and version you have used, and retain the version information when citing the data in research, publications, maps, or other work.

For additional guidance on citing research data, see the Big Ten Academic Alliance Data Citation Guide.

The datasets are currently in the process of obtaining official DOIs. Once assigned, DOI information will be incorporated into the recommended citations and dataset metadata.

Data Provenance

Data provenance documents where data comes from and how it was created, processed, and revised over time. It records the sources, research, methods, contributors, and transformations that underlie a dataset, providing a transparent account of how the published data were derived. For the Global Ecclesiastical Jurisdictions Repository, provenance helps users understand the evidence and processes behind each version of the mapped boundaries.

Original Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Team

The 2016 Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church project and all derivatives was a collaborative effort involving researchers, GIS and cartographic specialists, data contributors, and ecclesiastical-information researchers. The 2016 Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church project was a deeply collaborative effort. Many people beyond those listed below contributed local knowledge, source materials, verification, review, and other forms of expertise that helped refine and validate the dataset. The following names represent the core team members and experts who were most substantially involved in the project; they are not intended to constitute a complete list of everyone who contributed. We are deeply grateful to all those who shared their time, knowledge, maps, documents, and expertise in support of this work.
